Understanding Your Bill
St. Joe's is committed to providing you with the best medical care possible. We want to help you understand your bill and make sure any questions you have are answered.
- What should I expect to pay at the time of service?
Our goal is to discuss your financial responsibility to ensure you are informed about the cost of services you are receiving and to avoid any surprises later when you receive your bill.
During the registration process, we will run your insurance information and let you know about required co-pays, coinsurance or deductible amounts. These are collected at the time of service. For convenience, we accept cash, check, or credit card.
- How much do I really owe?
After your insurance company has processed your claim, we will bill you for your part of the bill. Most insurance plans require patients to pay part of their hospital bill.
If you have questions about your insurance, please contact your insurance company. If you do not have insurance, you are responsible for your hospital bill. We give an automatic discount for patients without insurance coverage.
- What if I cannot pay?
In keeping with our mission, we are proud to provide financial assistance based on resources, income, and household size. We may be able to help you with all or part of your responsibility for hospital services. Financial assistance is available to all patients.
If you would like to pay your bill over time in smaller payments, we can help you set up a payment plan. Please call one of our Financial Counselors for assistance.
- Why did I receive a separate doctor, ambulance or laboratory bill?
Many doctors, ambulance companies, and laboratories who work with St. Joe's are not St, Joe's employees. They're separate businesses with their own billing. If you have insurance questions, contact their office directly.

Clinics and Hospital-Based Outpatient Services
“Provider-Based” or “Hospital-Based Outpatient” refers to the billing process for services rendered in a hospital outpatient clinic or location. This is the national model of practice for integrated health systems involved in patient care and St. Joseph Regional Medical Center follows these very specific billing practices as regulated by the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services.
This means that patient may receive two bills: One from the hospital (the technical component) and one for the practitioner’s professional services.
